PRESS RELEASE
On Sunday, 8/28/2016, Pope County Deputies responded to a disturbance call on Waldo Lane in Dover. As deputies approached the residence, the suspect, identified at Robert Baird, fired a shotgun toward the officers. After being struck by shrapnel, two of the deputies took cover behind a trailer. One of the officers was struck in the forehead causing bleeding and a contusion. Other officers and investigators arrived on scene to assist with diffusing the situation. Ultimately, Baird was arrested and transported to the Pope County Detention Center where he was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was issued a bond of $150,000 in Monday bond hearings by Circuit Judge Mack McCain.
Sheriff Jones….”I am so grateful that the officers were not more seriously injured. This was a bad situation that very easily could’ve turned into a tragedy. Each day our officers face situations that may turn deadly at any moment. Thankfully, their training and quick action enabled them to return home to their families at the end of their shift.” |
